Mulch Calculator
Calculate the exact amount of mulch you need in cubic yards for bulk delivery or in bags for a DIY project. Includes cost estimation.
The Ultimate Guide to Buying the Right Amount of Mulch
Applying a fresh layer of mulch is one of the fastest and most effective ways to boost your home's curb appeal and improve the health of your garden beds. But how much do you need? Buying too little means a second trip to the store, while buying too much is a waste of money and effort. This calculator helps you get it right the first time.
How to Use the Mulch Calculator
- Choose Units and Shape: Select either Imperial or Metric units, then choose the shape that best matches your garden bed (Rectangle or Circle). For complex, L-shaped beds, it's best to break them into smaller rectangles and calculate each one.
- Enter Dimensions: Measure the length and width (for rectangles) or the radius (for circles) of your garden bed. Then, decide on your desired mulch depth.
- Enter Material Details (Optional): If you want to estimate your costs, fill in the size of the bags you plan to buy and the price per bag or per cubic yard.
- Calculate: Click the button to get an instant, accurate estimate of your mulch needs.
Why Mulch Depth is Important
The correct depth is key to getting the benefits of mulching:
- 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm): The ideal depth for most applications. This is deep enough to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture without smothering plant roots.
- 1 inch (2.5 cm): A light "top dressing" to freshen up the color of existing mulch.
- 4+ inches (10+ cm): Generally too deep for most flower beds, as it can starve roots of oxygen. This depth is more suitable for natural pathways or areas with no plants.
Bulk vs. Bags: What's the Difference?
Our calculator gives you results in both cubic yards/meters (for bulk) and bags.
- Bags: Convenient for small projects. Easy to transport and store.
- Bulk (Cubic Yards): Much more cost-effective for large areas. One cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet. A small pickup truck can typically hold 2-3 cubic yards.
