How to Calculate Square Footage: A Complete Guide
Square footage is a measurement of area, expressed in square feet. Calculating it is the essential first step for a wide range of home improvement, landscaping, and real estate projects. Our calculator simplifies this process, but understanding the basics will help you measure your spaces accurately.
Measuring Your Space
- For Rectangles: Measure the length and the width of the space and multiply them. `Area = Length × Width`. This is the most common calculation, used for most rooms.
- For Triangles: Measure the base of the triangle and the height (from the center of the base to the highest point). The formula is `Area = 0.5 × Base × Height`.
- For Circles: Measure the radius (the distance from the center of the circle to its edge). The formula is `Area = π × Radius²`, where π (Pi) is approximately 3.14159.
- For Complex Spaces: For L-shaped or other non-rectangular rooms, break the space down into smaller, regular rectangles. Measure each rectangle individually and then add them together for a total. Our "Combined" calculator mode does this for you automatically!
Practical Applications
- Flooring & Tiling: Determine how much hardwood, carpet, laminate, or tile you need to buy. Always add 10-15% to your total for cuts and waste.
- Painting: Calculate the area of your walls to know how much paint to purchase. (Measure wall length and height).
- Landscaping: Estimate the amount of sod, grass seed, or mulch needed for your yard.
- Real Estate: Square footage is a key metric in determining a property's value.
- Building Projects: Pouring a concrete patio? After finding the square footage here, use our Concrete Calculator to find the required volume.
