What is Scientific Notation?

Scientific notation is a way of writing very large or very small numbers in a compact and standardized form. It is widely used in science, engineering, and mathematics. The format is:

How to Convert to Scientific Notation

  1. Move the decimal point in your original number to create a new number between 1 and 10. This new number is your coefficient (a).
  2. Count the number of places you moved the decimal point. This number is your exponent (n).
  3. If you moved the decimal to the left, the exponent is positive. If you moved it to the right, the exponent is negative.

Example (Large Number): Convert 597,200,000 to scientific notation.
→ Move the decimal 8 places to the left: 5.972
→ The result is 5.972 × 108.

Example (Small Number): Convert 0.0000451 to scientific notation.
→ Move the decimal 5 places to the right: 4.51
→ The result is 4.51 × 10-5.
