The Fundamentals of Probability
Probability is a branch of mathematics that measures the likelihood of an event occurring. It is quantified as a number between 0 and 1, where 0 indicates impossibility and 1 indicates certainty. This calculator helps you compute probabilities for various scenarios.
Basic Probability Formulas
- P(A): Probability of a Single Event
This is the most basic form. For example, the probability of rolling a 3 on a six-sided die is 1 (favorable outcome) out of 6 (total outcomes), or 1/6.
Formula: `P(A) = Favorable Outcomes / Total Outcomes` - P(A'): Probability of the Complement
The complement of an event A is the event that A does not occur. If P(A) is the chance of rain, P(A') is the chance of no rain.
Formula: `P(A') = 1 - P(A)` - P(A and B): Probability of Two Independent Events
Two events are independent if the outcome of one does not affect the outcome of the other. For example, flipping a coin twice.
Formula: `P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B)` - P(A or B): Probability of Either Event Occurring
This is the probability that event A, or event B, or both occur. If the events are mutually exclusive (cannot happen at the same time), then P(A and B) is 0.
Formula: `P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B)`
