Calculated Mass

Please enter your object's properties and click "Calculate Mass".

Understanding Mass and How It's Calculated

In physics, **mass** is the measure of the amount of matter in a physical body. It's a fundamental property of an object and does not change regardless of location. This is different from **weight**, which is the measure of the gravitational force acting on an object. An astronaut has the same mass on Earth as they do on the Moon, but their weight is much less on the Moon due to the lower gravity.

The Mass, Density, and Volume Relationship

The mass of an object is determined by its volume (how much space it takes up) and its density (how much matter is packed into that space). The formula is:

Mass = Density × Volume

Our calculator simplifies this by first helping you calculate the volume of a common shape and then using that volume, along with the object's material density, to find its total mass.

How to Use the Mass Calculator

  1. Select the Object's Shape: Choose between Rectangle, Cylinder, or Sphere.
  2. Enter the Object's Density: You'll need to know the density of the material your object is made from. You can find tables of common material densities online (e.g., water is 1000 kg/m³, steel is approx. 7850 kg/m³). Be sure to select the correct units for your density value.
  3. Enter Dimensions: Choose the unit you used for your measurements (e.g., inches, cm), then enter the dimensions of your object.
  4. Calculate: Click the button to see the calculated mass in several common units.
