How to Calculate Horsepower: Two Common Methods
This calculator offers two different ways to determine horsepower, each with its own application.
Method 1: Calculation from Torque and RPM (The Engineer's Way)
This is the most direct and physically accurate way to calculate horsepower. Torque is the measure of an engine's rotational or "twisting" force. Horsepower is a function of that torque being applied over time (revolutions per minute).
The formula is: Horsepower = (Torque × RPM) / 5252
The number 5252 is a constant that makes the units work out correctly. An interesting fact from this formula is that at 5252 RPM, an engine's horsepower and torque values are always equal.
Method 2: Estimation from 1/4 Mile Time and Weight (The Racer's Way)
For car enthusiasts who don't have access to an engine dynamometer, this is a very popular way to estimate horsepower at the wheels. It's based on the vehicle's performance in a quarter-mile drag race.
The formula is: Horsepower = Vehicle Weight / (Elapsed Time / 5.825)³
This provides an estimate of "wheel horsepower" (WHP), which is typically 10-15% lower than the "brake horsepower" (BHP) measured at the engine, due to drivetrain losses. This method is great for comparing the real-world performance of different cars or the effect of modifications.
