What Is a Healthy Weight?
A "healthy weight" is not a single, magic number but rather a weight range that is associated with good health and a lower risk of weight-related diseases. This range varies from person to person and is primarily influenced by height. It is a more flexible and realistic goal than striving for an exact "ideal weight."
How This Calculator Works: Using Body Mass Index (BMI)
The most common method used by health organizations to define a healthy weight range is the Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is a measure that relates your weight to your height. While it doesn't measure body fat directly, it correlates strongly with more direct measures and is a simple, effective screening tool for potential weight problems.
- A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is classified as being in the Normal or Healthy Weight range.
- A BMI below 18.5 is considered Underweight.
- A BMI between 25.0 and 29.9 is considered Overweight.
- A BMI of 30.0 or higher is considered Obese.
Our calculator determines the weight range that corresponds to a healthy BMI for your height. For a more detailed analysis of your own BMI, you can use our dedicated BMI Calculator.
Beyond the Scale: Limitations of BMI
While BMI is an excellent tool for most of the population, it has limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat. For example:
- Athletes: Highly muscular individuals may have a high BMI that classifies them as "overweight," even with very low body fat.
- Older Adults: As people age, they may lose muscle mass, which could result in a "normal" BMI despite having excess body fat.
For these reasons, it's often beneficial to consider other metrics alongside BMI, such as waist circumference or body fat percentage. Our Body Fat Calculator can provide a useful estimate.
