What is GPA?
GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a standard way of measuring academic achievement in the U.S. It is a number representing the average value of the accumulated final grades earned in courses over time. GPA is calculated by taking the number of grade points a student earned in a given period of time divided by the total number of credits taken.
How to Calculate GPA Manually
Understanding how your GPA is calculated can help you set academic goals. Here is the standard process:
- Assign Grade Points: Each letter grade corresponds to a point value. A common scale is: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0. Plus (+) and minus (-) grades are often included (e.g., A-=3.7, B+=3.3).
- Calculate Quality Points: For each course, multiply the grade point by the number of credits. For example, a 'B' (3.0 points) in a 3-credit class is worth 9 quality points (3.0 x 3).
- Sum Totals: Add up all your quality points and all your credit hours from all courses.
- Divide: Divide your total quality points by your total credit hours. The result is your GPA.
Why is Your GPA Important?
Your GPA is more than just a number; it's a key indicator of your academic performance that is often used for:
- Scholarship Applications: Many scholarships have a minimum GPA requirement.
- College and University Admissions: A higher GPA can significantly improve your chances of getting into your desired program.
- Honors and Academic Recognition: Making the Dean's List or graduating with honors often depends on your GPA.
- Job and Internship Applications: Some employers, especially for entry-level positions, may ask for your GPA as a measure of your diligence and ability.
